Explore Data
Overview
The Explore Data section (accessible via the Left Navigation Menu or the Explore button on the Homepage Dashboard) provides tools to browse, filter and visualize sequence data.
The page combines interactive visualizations and a data table that operate on the same dataset, allowing users to switch between graphical exploration and detailed record inspection.
Data Scope (Mine / Shared / All)
The Explore Data page allows users to switch between different data scopes using the tabs located at the top of the page:
- Mine: displays records owned by the current user.
- Shared: displays records shared with the current user.
- All: displays all records accessible to the current user.
Changing the selected scope updates both the Data Table and the Data Visualization panels simultaneously.
The selected scope affects all visualizations, filters and table results displayed on the page.
Layout & Display Modes
The Explore Data page is composed of two synchronized panels:
- a Data Table panel used to browse, filter and manage records;
- a Data Visualization panel used to explore aggregated information graphically.
By default, both panels are displayed side by side.
Users can independently show or hide each panel using the Data Table View and DataViz View toggles located above the corresponding sections.
Depending on the selected toggles, users can:
- display both panels simultaneously;
- display only the Data Table;
- display only the Data Visualization.
When one panel is hidden, the remaining panel automatically expands to occupy the available screen space.
Data Visualization
Sunburst Visualization
The landing page of Visualize displays a Sunburst chart representing the global classification of identified viruses.
Organization:
- The chart is classified hierarchically by Serotype and Genotype.
Filters and interactions:
- Select single or multiple Serotypes (not available yet).
- Select single or multiple Genotypes.
- Combine multiple serotypes and genotypes simultaneously.
- Click the Filter icon to display the available filters.
- Use the Time Range slider at the bottom to restrict the visualization to a specific date range (not available yet, can be done with the Data Table filters).
Export:
- You can export the Sunburst visualization as an image once you are satisfied with the result (not available yet).
Histogram Visualization
The Histogram view is available within the Data Visualization panel and uses the same data scope, filters and date range settings as the other Explore Data visualizations.
The Histogram View provides aggregated views of data along multiple dimensions:
- Time Unit (day, week, month, etc.)
- Data Type
- Segmentation Field (a finite list determined by the app)
Users can:
- Apply filters.
- Export histogram charts as images.
Data Table
The Data Table panel can be displayed or hidden using the Data Table View toggle.
The table can be viewed alongside the Data Visualization panel or independently in full-width mode.
Usage
The Data Table is the interface where users explore and validate records at scale.
The records displayed in the Data Table depend on the currently selected data scope (Mine, Shared or All) and any active filters applied within Explore Data.
Technical behavior
-
Columns & Views: Select visible columns.
-
Sorting: Click a header to sort; use Shift+Click for multi-sort.
-
Filtering: The table is fully filterable on all fields:
- Quick filter across visible columns.
- Advanced filters (
=,≠,>,<,contains,in,between dates). - Filters can be combined and saved.
- Filters are automatically applied to the Data Visualization panel.
- Note: Empty cells indicate either missing information or private data (you do not have rights to view that specific field).
-
Selection & bulk actions: Use the checkboxes in the grid to select multiple sequences. Once selected, you can:
- delete them in bulk (with permission),
- add them to a new or existing dataset,
- share the selected items with Working Groups (when available).
Note: The list of available bulk actions depends on the current context and the selected items. Actions are also filtered based on the permissions of the current user. As a result, some actions may not be visible or available depending on your rights.
-
Data Editing (owned sequences):
- Click the Pencil icon (Edit) to enter edit mode on a sequence.
- Modify the editable fields.
- Click Continue to trigger a validation check.
- If valid, click Apply to save; otherwise, click Back to correct errors.
-
Deletion: Click the three dots (…) to delete a sequence you own.
-
Export: Click Download at the bottom to export data. Options include:
- All data
- Selected rows
- Metadata only (CSV)
- Arbogen IDs only (CSV)
- FASTA sequences
- Complete export packages
